Much of the demand for local food must come from supermarkets, because they dominate the food retailing market.
We want supermarkets to have a clear definition of what is meant by the term 'local food'. Our definition is that the product should be grown and processed within 30 miles of the store.
Waitrose has adopted CPRE’s definition of local food and we are working with other supermarkets and organisations to encourage an increase in the demand for local foods and to improve its supply.
“We have been working with supermarkets, challenging them to increase their range of genuinely local foods.”
Bill Bryson, CPRE President
